Military Intelligence assets in Somalia have confirmed that an airstrike conducted by U.S. military in Lower Shabelle, southwest of the capital Mogadishu killed four (4) extremists of the Al-Qaeda aligned, Al-Shabaab militant group.
The precision airstrike was conducted on Monday by an unmanned U.S. drone in the latest onslaught aimed at disrupting the militant’s network in Mogadishu and Lower Shabelle where the group’s presence and control is still high.
The drone strike was conducted in coordination with allied intelligence assets who assisted in tracking the killed militants before the U.S. airstrike.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Miguel A. Castellanos, the deputy director of operations underscored that, U.S. will continue to work closely with allied partners by taking decisive action to eliminate militants in Somalia.
This was 21st airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia so far, this year and the highest within a similar period in the previous years and encounters. Mostly the airstrikes are targeted in remote villages in southern and central Somalia where the group still maintains control.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a statement noted that no civilians were injured or killed as a result of the airstrike.
