Violence in South Sudan has greatly affected the effectiveness of the United Nations humanitarian agency. Fighters have targeted innocent people indiscriminately including UN aid personnel. This has forced some of the aid workers to flee the warring country.
It is in this response that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on the two warring parties in South Sudan to forge measures to end the long overdue struggle.
UN children’s agency UNICEF early July 2015 reported the increased recruitment of children into fighting. So far, more than 13,000 children are child soldiers on the war front in South Sudan. More than 250,000 children face severe malnourishment in the situation.
The civil war began in December 2013 when President Salva Kiir fired his deputy Riek Machar on suspicion of plotting a coup.
UN Security Council imposed sanctions on six commanders from both sides of the conflict for their role in the spiraling violence.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon further asked South Sudan’s neighbors to use their influence on the warring sides to help end the conflict.
