
Kenya has approximately 4,000 soldiers out of the 22,000 AU strong force in Somalia. Other countries contributing troops in Somalia include Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi and Djibouti.
Lately AU mission in Somalia has been facing shortage of funds after the European Union which is among the major financiers cut it funding by 20 percent.
The heads of state to the countries contributing forces to the AMISOM met in Djibouti where they discussed hiccups faced AMISOM. Funding was one area they called on International Community to intervene as well as AU to make sure the mission runs smoothly.
Kenya’s Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo urged UN to urgently look into AMISOM funds shortage. CS Omamo called on UN to allocate more resources to the mission to make sure the troops win the war against Al-Shabaab.
“AMISOM must be treated in the same way that we treat any force that fight for the world peace.”CS Omamo added.
