A U.S. Special Forces was killed on Saturday, 13th July 2019 in Afghanistan, NATO’s Resolute Support mission announced without giving further details.
The U.S. Department of Defense has identified the service member as Sergeant Major James G. Sartor, 40, of Teague, Texas. Sergeant Major Sartor was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colorado.
He was killed by small arms fire during anti-terror operations in Faryad province in northern Afghanistan, according to Special Operations Command.
A highly decorated officer joined the U.S. Army in June 2001 and completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2005. He had deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan six times prior to his death.
Some of his commendations included the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Sartor will posthumously be awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals.
His death brings to 10 the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year, compared to 12 in 2018.
