U.S. on Tuesday pledged to support Kenya and Somalia following the recent terrorist attacks orchestrated by the Al Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab.
The White House strongly condemned the attacks that recently happened in the two countries and promised to work together to deliver a lasting defeat to the terrorist groups waging attacks in an effort to undermine the regional stability.
Through a statement issued by National Security Council spokesman Ned Price, the White House referenced the Mandera attack at a guest house that left 12 people (non-Muslims) killed and the attack on AMISOM’s base in central Somalia that targeted Djibouti soldiers.
“The United States continues to stand with the people of Kenya and Somalia as they work to strengthen their security and expand opportunity for all citizens,” the US statement read in part.
According to security analysts, Al-Shabaab is stepping up attacks with an aim of disrupting the parliamentary and presidential election process in Somalia.
U.S. has deployed a number of Special Forces in Somalia involved in training and advising Somalia Army. The special operations troops have also been collaborating with AMISOM and Somali Army in carrying out successful raids against Al-Shabaab camps in Somalia, significantly weakening the Islamists Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
