In the Horn of Africa nation, Somalia, the resilience of women against the notorious terrorist group Al-Shabaab has garnered commendation. Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama has underscored the pivotal role played by women in actively supporting the government’s operations against Al-Shabaab. Beyond the security realm, women are acknowledged for their substantial contributions to economic development, business, and goods production within the country.
Gender mainstreaming initiatives, particularly in politics, are actively underway, indicating a commitment by the government to enhance women’s participation in decision-making processes. Over the past 12 months, Somalia has been engaged in a vigorous war against Al-Shabaab, achieving significant progress in central regions within the states of HirShabelle and Galmadug.
Somalia government reports notable success in its anti-Al-Shabaab operations, claiming the elimination of over 3,000 militants during the preceding year. This highlights the military’s determination and progress in addressing the persistent threat posed by the extremist group. Future military endeavors are anticipated to extend to Jubaland and Southwest states after the conclusion of operations in Galmadug and HirShabelle.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called for a technical pause in the withdrawal of troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) due to logistical challenges. The expectation is that Al-Shabaab will be defeated by December 2024 as foreign missions exit.
Women’s groups have played an active role throughout the past 12 months, contributing to the preparation and provision of food for the government’s army. This collective effort serves to demonstrate solidarity and boost morale during critical operations.
The government’s reports of the liberation of several regions indicate tangible progress in its efforts against Al-Shabaab. With ongoing support from women and strategic military operations, there is an optimistic outlook toward achieving the goal of defeating Al-Shabaab by the targeted deadline in December 2024.
