A suspected terror attack on Sunday, 5th June 2022 left over 50 catholic faithful/worshippers killed in Nigeria’s Ondo State. Explosives reportedly detonated in fatal attack during mass at church.
Gunmen attacked a Catholic church in Ondo state, Nigeria, during mass on Sunday, leaving dozens dead, in what has been described as a “satanic attack” by local officials. The gun welding attackers targeted the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in the town of Owo, Ondo state of Nigeria, just as the worshippers gathered on Pentecost Sunday, as per state legislator Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole.
Local media said the gunmen had fired at worshippers and detonated explosives at the church. Among the dead were many children and women. Videos appearing to be from the scene of the attack showed church worshippers lying in pools of blood while people around them wailed.
A doctor at a hospital in Owo, a town in the state in Nigeria’s southwest, told media that no fewer than 50 bodies had been moved to the FMC (Federal Medical Center) in Owo and to St. Louis Catholic Hospital.
That attack has received condemnation from across the world leaders. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack, calling it “heinous and cowardly act.” The identity and motive of the attackers was not immediately clear.
It’s believed that the act could have been perpetrated by ethnic Fulani terrorists, sometimes referred to as bandits, that have staged relentless attacks predominantly in northern Nigeria as well as other parts of the country.
