The South Sudanese army (SPLA) on Thursday claimed that it repulsed the armed opposition rebels.
According the government army forces, the fighters were under the leadership of the exiled first vice president Riek Machar.
Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Lul Koang said Nasir town came under gun fire from three separate directions noting the that attackers were successfully repulsed after government forces in the areas used heavy artillery to thwart their attempts to gain control.
The attack has received condemnation as it in violation of the much sort ceasefire in the world’s youngest nation.
The state official called on the regional bloc (IGAD) and peace guarantors to restrain armed opposition rebels from repeatedly violating the ceasefire ahead of forthcoming peace negotiations.
The IGAD-led peace revitalization process was suspended on 16 February, after failure by the rival parties to reach an agreement over security, constitutional and governance matters. The talks aim at putting to an end five year of civil war in South Sudan.
