A man who confessed of abandoning Britain where he had been a citizen and travelling back to the country of his birth and joined the Somali based Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab was sentenced to nine years in prison.
The Somali born man identified as Mahdi Hashi, 26, was sentenced in Brooklyn, New York by U.S. District Judge John Gleeson upon pleading guilty of the charges of conspiring to provide material support to Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
A week ago, the judge had sentenced two other Swedish nationals identified as Ali Yasin Ahmed and Mohamed Yusuf, to 11 years in prison for working alongside Hashi in supporting Al-Shabaab.
Unlike Yusuf and Ahmed, who fought in Al-Shabaab battles, prosecutors said they had no evidence Hashi engaged in violence before leaving the group though he supported the militant group with materials.
Al-Shabaab militant group, which seeks to overthrow Somalia’s International-backed government and impose a strict version of Sharia, or Islamic Law is affiliated to Al Qaeda terrorist organization and has expanded it attacks Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda for their force contribution in AMISOM.
