Shiite rebels on Wednesday attacked and conquered the seaport city in Yemen where Yemen President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi had seeked refuge amidst the ongoing war.
The President then fled from Aden following an official announcement of the invasion via a Houthi forces owned media station.
The attack on an air base about 60 km (37 miles) north of Aden which led to the intensified wars between forces and members of a militia group loyal to Yemen’s President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, known as the Popular Committees saw Yemen’s president flee to an unknown location after the “victory” announcement.
The base, which was being used by U.S. troops to train and advice the country’s forces on how to combat the al-Qaeda was hard hit by the Iranian-backed Houthi movement which has now taken over major northern parts of the country.
The takeover by the Houthis comes at a time when the U.S. had evacuated close to 100 of its soldiers from the base after it was captured by the Al Qaeda.
Presidential officials who chose to remain unknown confirmed that the president fled from his palace located at the top of a hill in Aden. He was thereafter driven away in a convoy of presidential vehicles.
This comes after Hadi had officially written to the United Nations Security Council and asked them to come to the country’s rescue by authorizing military intervention.
