Barely a day after Strategic Intelligence director of regional intelligence provided insight on the basis of South Sudan conflict, an attempted coup de-tat in Juba confirms the threat. T
he Luo-Nuer in the SPLA attempted to take power late Sunday and throughout early Monday, December 2013. An attack on a military base located outside Juba University was the onset of the coup attempt.

Intelligence reports heavy gunfire and blasts first erupted late Sunday and into early Monday morning in the South Sudan capital Juba.
The president, wearing military fatigues told away the attempted coup by sacked vice president, Riek Marchar. Machar Loyalists in the army early Monday attacked a military barracks. The government then imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Citizens retired leaving the streets deserted. By 1900GMT at the Tomping neighborhood, renewed shooting rocked the capital. An estimated 10000 flocked the United Nations compound in Juba.
Government troops have since then started patrolling streets and restoring order in the capital.
Oil Deals, Ethnic Conflict, and Politics in Juba Fuel Conflict.
Salva Kiir, the president of the Republic of South Sudan comes from the Dinka of South Sudan who have a long standing conflict with Riek Machar’s Luo-Nuer.
The Luo-Nuer have since then formed a militia that constantly attack the Murle and Dinka. Oil deals which are political contribute to South Sudan conflict.

Politics further compounds the problem. Riek Machar wants to be president of South Sudan. Ethnic conflict charged by both economics and politics have forced Machar and Kiir’s communities to clash.
South Sudan government soldiers are patrolling the streets and have set up roadblocks to restore normalcy.
The president has since then appeared on national television flanked by his cabinet ministers. He made a statement citing Dr Riek Machar as the mastermind of the attempted coup on the democratically elected government of the South Sudan.
