President Donald Trump boosted U.S military authority to scale-up operations in the fight against Islamist insurgents in Somalia.
According to Defence Department U.S military will no longer have to justify a launch and carrying out air bombardments.
The authority gives the military autonomy in decision-making thus more air raids expected in Somalia in the coming days.
Though a statement, Pentagon spokesman, Navy Captain Jeff Davis confirmed president approval on Department of Defence proposal to provide addition air support to SNA and the African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM).
SNA and AMISOM forces are fighting the Islamist linked Al-Qaeda terrorists. The militants have been dislodged from several regions across Somalia including the capital Mogadishu but still controls parts of the country.
The bombardment to target the militant remaining bastion including the militant group’s headquarters of Jilib.
U.S has been supporting counter-terrorism efforts in Somalia providing air support to the troops. Several Al-Shabaab commanders including its former Ahmed Abdi Godane were killed in US air strikes.
