The Nigerian military has launched operations in Borno State aimed at clearing land mines rigged with IED by the Boko Haram militants. The military spokesman Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman announced the clearing of the Gwoza-Yamtake road which is a very strategic road in Borno State of all landmines.
The operation was conducted by joint effort between the Nigerian Air Force and the Army where the air force bombards the militants from the air as the troops move in.
The operation was able to not only clear the land mines but also recover Munitions such as drilling machines, howitzer artillery cannon and rocket-propelled grenades.
The continued pressure exerted on the militants through attacks from the military is yielding results after local Nigerian media reported that Boko Haram was looking to negotiate with the government.
The Nigerian military however has intensified the attacks as the AU-approved Multi-National Joint Task is expected to launch its campaign to eradicate the Boko Haram. The task force will consist of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Benin and Cameroon.
