Mogadishu has a new police commander, Mahdi Omar Mumin. The new police boss will oversee security operations in the Somalia capital Mogadishu. His appointment comes after the of the Mogadishu Police chief who was killed during a security operation against Al-Shabaab militants near Balad town, about 30 km north of the city.
Farhan Mohamoud Adan, Banadir regional police commissioner, was leading an operation in Basra at the border between Banadir and Middle Shabelle regions when they clashed with Al-Shabaab.
The commander of the Somali Police Force Abdi Hassan Mohammed on Tuesday appointed Lt. Col. Mahdi Omar Mumin as the new head of Police of the Somali capital. The new Mogadishu Police boss will be tasked with providing security for about three million inhabitants of the capital city.
Mumin will be spearheading efforts aimed at tackling Mogadishu’s poor security and helping the new administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accelerate service delivery to the people of Somalia.
Over the years, and especially during the tenure of President Farmajo, terror incidents significantly rose in the capital Mogadishu besides increased insecurity from criminal gangs like Ciyaal Weero.
Lt. Col. Mahdi Omar Mumin previously served as Head of Public Affairs for The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). He also become the commander of the NISA office in the Galmudug regional state where he played outstanding role in the fight against the extremist group Al-Shabaab.
The Somali government supported by allied partner troops has vowed to enhance operations across the country as the fight against Al-Shabaab intensifies in many regions of the country.
