Military forces loyal to Libya’s eastern government on Thursday 21st April 2016 carried out aerial assaults overnight against the Islamist fighters in Derna.
Derna has be faced by a three-way conflict between military forces loyal to the eastern government, an Islamist grouping known as the Derna Mujahideen Shura Council and Islamic State militants.
Islamic State fighters have established foothold in Libya’s city of Sirte and now expanding it control to Derna region but not without resistance from Shura Council forces who managed to push them out on June 2015.
Military forces have been conducting operations against both terror groups.
According to military spokesman Abdulkarim Sabra, the overnight air assaults targeted Shura Council fighters in Derna's Sayeda Khadija neighbourhood and at Bishr prison though he did not disclose the number of casualties.
The military loyal to the eastern government has been making advances on the ground in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, on the coast about 250 km (155 miles) west of Derna.
