The exit of the former police Inspector General David M. Kimaiyo following various accusations of laxity in the war against terror brought a new face to the top most ranking in the National Police Service.
Meet Inspector General Joseph K. Boinnet; the man who holds office at the top most ranking position in the Kenya Police service.
In late 2014, several ranks at the police service were scrapped off following a meeting attended by members of the National Police Service Commission chaired by Chairman Johnson Kavuludi.
These amendments affected the following ranks; Assistant Commissioner of police, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police were effectively scrapped, and replaced by the senior assistant inspector general of police and assistant inspector general, according to the National Police Service act.
The Kenya police ranking can be physically recognized with the kind of badges they wear on the shoulders of their uniforms.
The Inspector General (IG) who is the senior most serving officer also serves as the overall commander of the Kenya National Police Service.
Under the IG is the Deputy Inspector General, followed by Senior Assistant Inspector –General, Assistant Inspector –General, Senior Superintendent, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Chief Inspector, inspector, Senior Sergeant, Sergeant and last but not least, the Constable.
This chain of command ensures that the police service operates in a more organized manner following a particular hierarchy.
