Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) second Brigade Recce team successfully concluded a four-day reconnaissance visit on various Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Somalia. The Recce team aim was to familiarize themselves with the situation on these FOBs under their AoR sector two and sector six from where they will be operating under African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
This tour took the team to visit ATMIS-FOBs operated by the Kenya Defense Forces. At Dhobley FOB, the team was briefed on the missions’ mandate as enshrined on the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2628. The team demonstrated desire to take on the mantle of enhancing the capabilities of Somalia National Army (SNA) and their security institutions once they rotate in.
The team comprised a number of troops who recently concluded their pre-deployment training in Kenya’s Samburu County. The troops have been arrow-sharpened in readiness to be deployed to support peace operations in an effort to foster stabilization of the war-torn Somalia.
The Sector Commander two Brigadier Jattani Gula underscored the importance of the team conducting reconnaissance first saying as it allows the Commander to understand the operating environment better. The tour helps in understanding the environment/terrain from where the troops will be operating and subsequently helps to focus on the troop’s efforts understand on the threats to security and mission accomplishment.

The team visited all the FOBs manned by KDF troops both in sector two and sector six. Sector Two – Under the security responsibility of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), with an operational base in Dhobley, the sector includes the Lower Juba, Lower Shabelle, Middle Juba and Gedo regions and Sector Six – This sector is under the security responsibility of a multinational force from the Ethiopia National Defense Forces (ENDF) and Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).
