Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has said that from a military perspective, ISIS had been defeated in Iraq, but the victory was not complete until a final operation to drive them out of the desert was successful. The announced by the Iraqi government came after a resounding win against the terrorist last week where security forces recaptured the border town of Rawa the last town under ISIL’s control.
The self-proclaimed Islamic caliphate overrun most of Iraq’s north and west in 2014 and has been instigating violence and massive recruitment since. However, the Iraqi government with the help of allied forces have successfully run-out the militants from all their strongholds.
Al-Abadi further echoed that Securing desert and border areas are what remains in the campaign against ISIL which would mean that the terror organization would have been completely defeated. Iraq’s statement comes as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declared the end of ISIL.
