Iraqi security forces have liberated a strategic region in western Anbar province from the control of Daesh terrorist group (Islamic State).
According to Major General Ismail al-Mahlawi, in charge of Anbar Operations Command and referenced by al-Sumaria on Sunday, Iraqi security forces conquered and regained control over the Khalidiya Island river peninsula, which lies nearly 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad.
During the operation dozens of terrorists were killed, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) recovered.
Major al-Mahlawi added that the bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene and diffused the IEDs and clearing of the booby-trapped houses in the area continues.
According to a brief by Commander of Federal Police Forces, Lieutenant General Raed Shaker Jawdat, Iraqi security forces had killed nearly 200 Daesh terrorists and disarmed 250 bombs in the operation to free the Khalidiya Island in a separate military offensive.
Also a high-ranking Daesh commander in Iraq and a self-proclaimed governor of northern Baghdad, has been killed alongside a large number of his aides in a US-led coalition airstrike.
