The UN Security Council on Tuesday passed a decision that imposes an arms ban on the Yemen Houthi rebels.
The council that has 15 members passed the resolution with 14 members voting in favor and one country, Russia abstaining.
Russia that is one of the permanent members of the Security Council explained her abstinence by saying that the embargo should have been imposed on the whole country not just the Houthi Rebels.
According to reports, the resolution also blacklisted Ahmed, son of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and another top Houthi leader, Abdulmalik al-Houthi. This move sees a global asset freeze and travel bans for them.
The resolution was proposed by Jordan and Gulf countries that are at the forefront of the military coalition led by Saudi Arabia that is bombing the Houthi positions in Yemen.
Yemeni Houthi fighters have responded by calling on to its supporters to protest the move by the UN Security Council. They condemned the move saying it supported aggression; this was in a statement released at the group’s official television channel by the Houthi’s governing body, the Supreme Revolutionary Committee.
The embargo is a one among many steps that the Security Council is taking to end the war in Yemen and back the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition as it is aimed at decapitating the weaponry supply of the rebels.
