1st February 2016, a disarmament, demobilization and reintegration centre is set to be constructed in Kismayo, Somalia in an effort to absolve the surrendered Al-Shabaab militants back into the society.
The new centre for the disengaged militants which will be funded by the German government will offer a much needed platform to reintegrate Al-Shabaab militants back into the communities.
The new centre will also help the Federal Government of Somalia and United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
On January 20th, 2016, top officials from German Embassy, UNSOM, the Federal Government of Somalia and International Organization for Migration visited the site where the centre will be built.
German deputy Ambassador, Christian Resch confirmed that his government is ready to partner with other stakeholders to commence the construction of the new rehabilitation centre for the disengaged militants.
The Minister of Interior of the Interim Jubba Administration, Mohamed Warsame Darwish welcomed the visit as well as the rehabilitation construction saying the centre will be helpful in reintegration process of young people who have decamped from the Al Qaeda affiliated group, the Al-Shabaab.
According to the Minister, Somalia was anticipating for the construction of a rehabilitation centre for a long time and now the site is ready for the construction to commence as soon as possible.
The Director of the programme for the defected/disengaged militants also welcomed the construction of the centre saying it will help Somali people win the hearts and minds of youths being misled by ideologues of Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
Chief of UNSOM Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section Mr. Patrick Loots hinted that once the new centre is completed, will give youths disengaged from the militants group a chance to restart their lives.
