A district commissioner has been sentenced to life for colluding with the al Shabaab and killing his deputy by a military court in Mogadishu. The Mahas District Commissioner, Sheikh Elmi Awale, was found guilty of conspiracy to murder his deputy.
The prosecutor revealed that Awale procured explosives that were planted in the car of his deputy Rashid Osman Abdi in April. Two other defendants-Ali Ahmed Gure and Noor Ibrahim whom the court established were members of the militant group Al-Shabaab condemned to face the firing squad by the court. The two were responsible for sourcing and delivering the explosives that killed Mr. Rashid.
The case though seeming unique it is not, seeing as corruption within the political, security and administrative ranks in Somalia is very rampant. High-ranking officials have colluded with al Shabaab to advance their individual and selfish agendas. These instances have contributed greatly in equipping the militants as well as undoing the gains made by the AU troops and other allies against al Shabaab.
