Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Vows to Fight African Union Peacekeepers

President Pierre NkurunzizaEVENT SUMMARY

30th December 2015, in a speech broadcast on a state radio, Burundian president vowed to fight AU troops if they ever step foot in Burundi.

The leader recently candidly claimed deployment of AU peacekeepers as violation of Burundi sovereignty.

The 54-memberAfrican Union had given Burundi a four day deadline on December 17 to accept 5,000 strong force to intervene months of violence and unrest witnessed since Nkurunziza was elected in a controversial third term.

Burundi leader has called on all African Union stakeholders to respect the borders of the country and if the troops get to Burundi, he urged Burundian people to stand up to fight them.

Burundi leadership opposition of AU force deployment is tricky to peace and stability of the broader East Africa region citing the country is facing imminent civil war if escalating violence is not stopped.

Burundi is still recovering from an ethnically-charged civil war between majority Hutus and minority Tutsis, which cost an estimated 300,000 lives between 1993 and 2006.

Since April 2015, hundreds of people have been killed and thousands others displaced when opponents of Nkurunziza’s re-election bid took to the streets in protest.

i dont think as a military man ,these words can scare me,this is a a very laughable joke,we are used to these not even within African borders but states like Afghanistan,Siera Leone,Eritrea,Iraq,Kuwait ,Botswana,Zimbabwe etal. Those who saw us there, the actions are witnesses. We will enter Burundi by that invasion force as it is termed by Burundian govt officials and do what military is called for.Burundi must be peaceful by all means.Pierre should not include innocent citizens in war for they are hungry, thirsty, naked, homeless, sick, injured ,raped, harassed, and all manner of human suffering .He should negotiate with his people and disallow them from fleeing the country, and assure them of protection.Nkurunzizza must understand if he is limited to thinking that AU is unbeatable especially when KDF,Egyptian ARMY,SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES ARE IN PLACE.we only need to send 1000 troops in Burundi and accomplish the mission. As we enter new year 2016 Burundi must change for better. We are with you Burundians.
