Detectives from Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) on foiled an attempted attack after they arrested two suspected terror operatives at the Likoni crossing channel, Mombasa, on Monday.
The detectives arrested two suspected operatives whose identity was not immediately revealed as they were about to cross from the Likoni mainland side to the island side.
The detectives intercepted and surrounded the vehicle, a Toyota Probox, registration number KCE 695U, and arrested the suspects as they attempted to flee.
Coastal Regional Commissioner confirmed the incident and noted that the Likoni Ferry Crossing channel and the Kenyan borders are mostly watched by the security agents. The Coastal Regional chief also noted that similar counterterrorism operations will continue.
The terror suspects believed are from Lunga Lunga and were being by trailed the officers. They were arrested with two AK47 rifles, ammunitions, machetes, cables and other items suspected of making explosives.
Preliminary reports indicate that the two were planning to attack a security installation in an attempt to free an accomplice who is in police custody. Also recovered include a map indicating places they had planned attacks.
