AMISOM has called upon all troop-contributing nations in Somalia to intensify their collaboration in ridding Somalia of al Shabaab and building the capacity of Somali National Security forces to counter Al Shabaab effectively.
In a seminar convened by AMISOM and supported by the UK government, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira called for efforts to defeat the threat posed by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Al Shabaab’s weapon of choice to security forces and civilian populations.
The IED threat in Somalia has increased following intensified security operations by the troops and as such al Shabaab opts to use landmines and other IED forms to ambush both civilian and military positions.
AMISOM resolved to use intelligence collection and sharing and working with civilian population to reduce the threat posed by al Shabaab and their violent antics. The ongoing collaboration between stakeholders and security agencies in the country has seen numerous defections from Al Shabaab, detainment of fighters and sympathizers as well as prevented attacks that have seen hundreds of militants killed.
