The School of Ordnance was established to support and maintain the Kenya Army through professional training of personnel.
It is one of the Kenya Defence Forces schools that offer learners with skills for different services in the armed forces and defence of the country in activities undertaken during war and at times of peace.
There are at least 14 KDF schools in the country which ipart these skills and knowledge including School of Infantry, School of Armour, School of Artillery, School of Combat Engineers among others situated in different parts of the country.
The inception of the institution was necessitated by the need to train local military personnel to take over from the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC).
RAOC was a corps of the British army that doubled up to supply weapons, armoured vehicles and other military equipment, ammunition and clothing as well as to repair Army equipment.

It started as training within industry section (TWI), growing in size and responsibility after independence.
The school has grown into a leading training institution in the Armed Forces responsible for providing and running courses and seminars not only in ordnance related fields but also combat service support, command and leadership for both officers and men Women of the three services.
The mission of the school is to equip officers and men/Women with the knowledge and skills needed to meet operations and administrative manpower requirements of the Kenya Army and sister services in supply matters and Combat Service Support (CSS) during peace time and War.
It majorly offers short courses that run through an average of 12 weeks.
