Russia has pledged to support Cameroon’s military efforts against Boko Haram, the Nigerian terrorist group wreaking havoc in the region. Nikolay Ratsiborinski, the Russian envoy to Cameroon, has informed President Paul Biya of Cameron that Russia is willing and ready to provide military assistance in support of the nation’s counter-terrorism efforts.
Russia plans to provide air defense equipment, heavy artillery, anti-aircraft missile systems, armored vehicles, canons and missiles among other weapons to the Cameroonian armed forces. The equipment will be delivered before the year ends. Moreover, specialized military training will be provided by Russian military officers.
According to Ratsiborinski, Russia aims to partner with Cameroon in order to improve its security, strengthen its border defenses and also develop the national economic infrastructure.
At the start of 2015, President Biya pleaded for international assistance to help Cameroon combat Nikolay Ratsiborinski. Boko Haram has recently escalated the tempo of its cross-border raids into Cameroon. Russia is simply responding to the appeal.
