French troops came under fire from Anti-Balaka Christian militia as they were escorting Muslim refugees out of CAR.
Intelligence reports confirm fighting between Christian militia and French soldiers in the Central Africa Republic.
Reports indicate unarmed Christians may have been killed during the attack.
Christian militia armed with assault rifles opened fire on French troops at Grimari, the center
of CAR.
There was fighting between the Christian militia and the Muslim fighters known as Seleka rebels.
Secterian violence broke out in CAR last year. Christians took up arms against Muslim Seleka led government who took power through a coup.
The Seleka rebels who have contact with Uganda’s Joseph Kony’s rebel movement were blamed for rape and indiscriminate killing of Christians and innocent women and children.
Christian militia were formed, armed and started a bloody onslaught on the Seleka government which they toppled in a few months.
Grimari lies in the centre of Central Africa Republic and has seen intense fighting between the Christians and the Muslims.
French Forces Attacked upon Deployment
French forces were deployed Sunday but came under fire from the Anti-Balaka rebels prompting a fire exchange that left several militants dead and unarmed civilians killed.
A French army captain, Capt. Sebastien Isern confirmed the incident. He further said that the French troops had been deployed in the areas and that calm had been restored in the area.
