European Union (EU) Political and Security Committee approved to commit an additional €2.3m to support the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
In a statement, EU underscored that the council is committed to add €120 million to the resources previously mobilised for AU Forces combating terrorist in Somalia in 2021.
The statement noted that support will mostly contribute to the troop’s allowances of the AU/ATMIS soldiers deployed, to enable the mandate granted to them in combating the extremist terrorists run effectively.
Notably, the previous support of €65 million under the EPF covering the period 1 July – 31 December 2021 was agreed in July 2021.
The European Union is the largest direct contributor to African Union Forces, estimated to be close to €2.3 billion since 2007.
The EU is ready to remain closely engaged and fully committed to contributing to the activities of AU Forces now known as ATMIS and consolidating the achievements attained so far.
