Belgium has announced that it would be sending 25 members of its Special Operations Regiment to Lwama in Kindu later this year to train the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) 31st Rapid Reaction Brigade. The Belgian forces are projected to aid in the improvement of the capabilities of the rapid reaction brigade of the Congolese military.
The deployment is in response to an October 2021 request by the DRC government seeking Belgian military support in the areas of land navigation, tactical combat casualty care, and counter-improvised explosive device techniques.
The training will equip the African nation’s military with the much-needed capability to aid in fighting the growing number of threats caused both by local guerilla rebels as well as the heightened threat by ISCAP that seeks to establish a caliphate in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces.
