The Republic of Southern Sudan is planning to buy arms to protect itself from aggression and local militia, an army intelligence official has confirmed.
The government of South Sudan is not under any restrictions to buy weapons from it’s international partners hence can purchase whichever arms it wants to defend the country.
Juba want’s to buy more weapons to arm it’s brigades to crush an armed rebellion which was factored by a failed coup led by former vice president Riek Machar.
The need to rearm the military is to have more sophisticated and effective weaponry.
Most of the rebels were armed by factions of the government military that broke ranks with the government.
It means the government soldiers are fighting with rebels armed with similar weapons as the government troops.
There has been renewed fighting between government troops and the rebels at Malakal late last week.
