The Al-Qaeda aligned Al-Shabaab militants continue to persistently wage targeted attacks especially on military bases and their convoys from across the regions of Somalia. In one such operation, Al-Shabaab claimed to have fired mortar shells at a Puntland military base in Af-urur village, about 70km from Bossaso Monday night.
Puntland officials confirmed of the attack that targeted one of its military bases in the Golis mountainous area of Bari region, highlighted that there were no casualties from the attack.
Al-Shabaab through the group’s propaganda channels issued a statement boasting the fighters targeted a Puntland military base, and that a fire had broken and destroyed one of the military tents.
The militant attack comes after a recent mop-up operation that Puntland troops in the Golis Mountains area launched on Al-Shabaab hideouts. The troops have intensified security at mountain bases following the mortar raid.
In 2017, Al-Shabaab carried out the deadliest attack on Af-urur village, killing nearly 50 soldiers, and burning military vehicles, as well as confiscating weapons and supplies.
