The United Nations (UN) condemned the latest targeted mortar shell attack on Halane military complex that houses several foreign missions. Halane houses among others, offices of the UN and African Union peacekeeping mission (AMISOM) in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
In the statement, UN confirmed of multiple mortar shell that rocked the heavily fortified complex and noted that no UN facilities were affected and no personnel was injured in the attacks. However, there were injuries caused by the attack but did clarify who are the victims.
James Swan, the UN special envoy for Somalia condemned the mortar attack that was claimed by the Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabaab and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The global body affirmed that Somalia’s international partners remain committed to stand by the people of Somalia, and continue supporting the advancement and stabilization of the country.
According to local sources, about six rounds of mortar shells were fired targeting the military base that was to host regional states members hours later.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack on the fortified military base in the capital Mogadishu is an indication that the Islamist Al-Shabaab primary objective to attack military targets remains unchanged.
