Afghan forces assisted by intelligence officers dismantled an Islamic State (IS) cell that was at an advanced stage in planning to assassinate Ross Wilson, a top U.S. envoy.
According to Afghan authorities, the security forces foiled a plan by the jihadist Islamic State group to assassinate the top U.S. envoy in Kabul, as a wave of targeted killings by the terrorists continues to rock the country.
The security forces were aided by Intelligence officers in dismantling a four-member Islamic State cell in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
The Afghan National Directorate of Security noted that the main assassin and facilitator of the cell, Abdul Wahed, had hatched a planned to assassinate the US ambassador in Afghanistan as well as some high-ranking Afghan officials but their plans were foiled following their arrests.
Wilson, the US Charge d’Affaires in Kabul, has persistently condemned spate of assassinations in the capital as well as in in other cities of prominent Afghans including journalists, activists, and politicians in recent months.
For several years now, IS has claimed several deadly attacks in Nangarhar, once the stronghold of the jihadist group in the country.
