Spain’s ambassador to Mozambique has announced that his country was willing to offer military support to aid in the defeat of Islamic State Central Province (ISCAP) active in most districts of the restive Cabo Delgado province.
Ambassador Alberto Cerezo reiterated that Spain had the experience to combat terrorism and has been doing so for decades and are willing to offer support as needed. Spain has implemented successful CT efforts that have prevented the spill-over of terrorists from North Africa which has been plagued by jihadists affiliated to both ISIS and Al Qaeda. Spain’s announced their support after the European Union and the United States that have already expressed their willingness to do so.
Mozambique’s insurgency has been gaining international traction with more daring attacks and cross-border activities in neighboring Tanzania stirring a need for an urgent and comprehensive approach to ensure that the insurgency is quashed. While Mozambique has been seeking support from allies, they have appeared reluctant to accept direct military intervention and instead are leaning towards training and other forms of support to ensure that its military develops the necessary capability to restore and sustain security in the country.
