Somalia’s elite Danab forces arrested several al Shabaab militants during an operation in War-Galo town, at least 75 kilometers east of troubled Galkayo town. The arrested are part of a series of operations by the elite US-Trained forces in several parts of Somalia to rid them of al Shabaab terrorists ahead of the anticipated AMISOM exit.
The Danab forces raided several hideouts for the militants, seizing explosives and other sophisticated weapons, which are used to inflict deaths and injuries against innocent civilians and security forces. Further, the troops announced that among those arrested were several high-level members of the al Qaeda affiliated group and will be pivotal in dismantling further the group’s reach.
Galkayo city has been the main terror hotspot, has often seen inter-clan conflicts before due to its borders between Puntland and Galmadug, the semi-autonomous states within the war-torn nation in the Horn of Africa.
The operation also comes a few days since the militants killed Mudug Governor Muse Nur in a bomb explosion within Galkayo town. The operation is geared at exerting pressure on the terror organization to ensure that its infrastructure is continuously weakened in an attempt to undermine the group’s efforts to establish itself further within Somalia.
