A London-based television journalist was assassinated in the streets of the capital Mogadishu on May 4, 2020. According to Somalia Journalists’ Union, the journalist was stabbed with a sharp object by unknown assailants on Monday evening after finishing his routine duties.
Said Yusuf Ali was killed by unknown assailants in the streets of Mogadishu in what is seen as a targeted killing. Journalists in Somalia for a long time have been targets of both Somali government agents and the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab.
Said Yusuf Ali who was working for the London-based Kalsan TV is one among many such cases in Somalia.
Though no one or militant group has claimed responsibility for the heinous killing, such synonymous incidents in Somalia are linked to government and Al-Shabaab. Though investigation on the incident has been launched, it highly possible that the matter will not be concluded is the Somalia government that is still struggling with dark past of the civil war has a hand in this assassination.
Somalia government has frequent tussles with the media, in the recent months a number of journalists working for VOA-Somali have been arrested and detained. The Somalia Journalist Union has condemned the killing and subjective arrests of their members.
In a quick rejoinder, President Farmajo termed journalism as noble career and distanced his administration which has been directly been blamed for the journalist’s misfortunes.
