The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on the Egyptian military vehicle in North Sinai. The attack killed and wounded at least 10 military personnel.
According to Army Spokesman Tamer al-Rifai, the attack occurred in the city of Bir al-Abed where the armored military vehicle detonated an explosive device. The attack is the first during the period of Ramadhan and as such could set the precedent for more attacks.
For years, security forces have been battling to contain the fighting in the turbulent North Sinai which intensified following the removal of President Mohamed Morsi by the military in 2013.
Recently ISIS-Central has been urging its various affiliates and provinces to take advantage of the pandemic and especially in the holy month to conduct attacks against the enemies and further the group’s agenda globally.
