The United States un support of the Federal Government of Somalia conducted two airstrikes towards the end of last week in the vicinity of Bush Madina. The airstrikes that are part of renewed efforts by the US to decimate the al Qaeda linked terror organisation in Somalia killed eight militants.
The US have stepped up their precision airstrikes against al Shabaab since the Mand Bay attack at the beginning of the year. Statistics indicate that the airstrikes in the last three months are the highest ever within the same period in the last previous years. In 2019, there were a total of 63 airstrikes in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab militants occupy large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia, where they have traditionally used for recruitment and training of young people, officials said. Intelligence reports indicate that the frequent airstrikes and persistent ground combats by SNA and AMISOM have forced some of them to take refuge in urban centres. Some are said to be moving back to the capital Mogadishu, where their lost grip in 2011.
