At least 20 Malian soldiers were killed in a pre-dawn attack on Sokolo military camp in the Segou region. The over 100 militants attacked the military post at around five in the morning shooting and gathering weapons and other material at the post where they engaged the soldiers for at last two hours.
BDA indicates that the militants believed to be affiliated to al Qaeda which is active in the region were very well armed and coordinated and left with all the weapons and vehicles at the camp.
The assault comes after a similar attack on Thursday by armed men in Dioungani, an area in the country’s volatile Mopti region near the border with Burkina Faso, killing at least six soldiers.
Mali has been struggling with jihadists either allied to al Qaeda or the Islamic State that has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians in a conflict that has spread across the entire country and extending to her neighbors Niger and Burkina Faso.
