The spokesman for the Islamic States of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was killed in northern Syria just hours after the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was announced dead. The spokesman, Abu Hassan al-Muhajir, was killed after fresh raids during the weekend targeted him.
Al-Muhajir, the right-hand of Baghdadi and the spokesman for IS, was targeted in the village of Ain al-Baydah near Jarablus, in a coordinated operation between SDF intelligence and the US army. Intelligence reports revealed that Al-Muhajir was travelling with four other ISIS members, who also died in the strikes, and he was travelling to reportedly facilitate Baghdadi’s entry into the Euphrates Shield area.
Al-Muhajir was a favorite to succeed Baghdadi and as such his death leaves the fate of the leadership of the largest terror group in disarray seeing as potential successors are neither Iraqis or Syrians. The leadership of ISIS which could potentially go to a Tunisian or a Saudi alongside other culminating factors could mean the end for the group. However, the highly secretive group is yet to comment on the deaths of their top leaders as well as the way forward for the group which still has numerous affiliates across the globe.
