Troops of the Nigerian military on Sunday night repelled what could have been one of the deadliest attacks on the University of Maiduguri, in Borno state.
Preliminary reports indicate that Suspected Boko Haram fighters made an attempt to enter the university through its back fence but met stiff resistance from the soldiers guarding the perimeters of the institution.
The militants had attempted to breach close to the ladies’ hostels but the military overpowered the group killed several of the attackers. The attempted attack comes just as the Governor of Borno state, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, had to defy security concerns of his aides to visit the campus.
Boko Haram has in the past few weeks seems to be conducting more successful attacks than not and as such the foiled attack is a good sign that the military’s capability against the terror organization been enhanced.
Boko Haram, a terror organization that is vocally opposed to western education has in the past attacked schools and kidnapped mostly girls attending school.
