Somali Special Forces have conducted landmine clearance operation a day after dislodging the Al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Shabaab from the strategic town of Awdhegle, Lower Shabelle region of Somalia.
Somali forces backed by AMISOM troops took control of the town Al-Shabaab had held for many years.
Military assets from the region report that mine experts had successfully removed IEDs and unexploded ordnance that were laid along roads of the town.
Awdhegle lies on the main supply road for African Union troops, AMISOM in southern Somalia and Al-Shabab has used the town as a base to launch attacks in the conflict-riddled Lower Shabelle region.
According to the commander of the Somali inventory unit Gen. Odowaa Yussuf Raage, the mine clearing and combing of the town and its environs will continue. Gen. Raage noted that the communities in Awdhegle town are still facing threats from landmines, IEDs, and unexploded ordnance which Al-Shabaab laid along the roads.
