The Somalia government has announced that it will award a prize in honour of journalist Hodan Nalayeh who was killed late last week in the city of Kismayo in an Al-Shabaab attack
Hodan Nalaye Award will be done annually in honour of the deceased’s inspirational life and the prize will be awarded “outstanding” individuals from the Somali diaspora.
Nalayeh, grew up in Canada and returned to Somalia last year to highlight positive stories about her country of birth.
She was expectant and was killed together with her husband at popular hotel in Kismayo when Al-Shabaab militia the hotel where regional politicians and clan elders were strategizing on forthcoming regional elections.
Nalayeh has been praised for her contribution in showcasing a different side to Somalia other than the stories of civil war, militancy and famine.
In her coverage she focused on the positives and ultimately inspired young Somalis around the world to help rebuild their country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Awad on official Twitter handle confirmed that his Ministry will have the Hodan Nalaye Award in honour of the deceased’s inspirational life.
