The Islamic States terrorists organization’s branch in Mozambique, (an offshoot of Islamic States in Central Africa, ISCAP), conducted a border attack targeting unarmed Tanzanian civilians at Quionga village beheading and killing 11, S.I intelligence sources confirm. The attack has led to an urgent security between Mozambique and Tanzanian military and police officials. The meeting sought to strengthen cooperation and security along the region, besides, conducting joint counter extremist operations along the border.
The killings took place at Quionga, a farming and fishing village in the Coastal Palma prefecture of Mozambique along River Ruvuma and just 13 kilometers to Tanzania’s frontier, on Wednesday 26th June 2019. The militants burnt down houses and looted shops. Intelligence reports warn that there is a major cell across the Ruvuma River and that the attackers were planning to cross the channel and join them, an indicator the group wants to deploy cells beyond the Cabo Delgado prefecture. If the cells successfully join the Tanzanian based cells, the threat in the region will multiply.
The attack comes several days after a terror warning was issued by United States embassy in Tanzania. Though government of Tanzania continue to downplay the presence of a large number of significantly dangerous terrorist cells in the country, data and credible intelligence confirm there’s a large number of cells that pose an immediate threat to the region and that the bulk of the Islamic States terror group’s rank and file in Northern Mozambique is primarily Tanzanian. A Large cell in Tanzania will automatically grant desperate jihadists their much desired chance to engage in terrorism.
