On the night of Friday the 21st of June 2019 at 2350Hrs EAT, the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen conducted a night terrorist attack targeting Yumbis Rural Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) station and a telecommunications base transmission station (BTS) belonging to Safaricom Ltd in Garissa North Eastern Prefecture of Kenya. The terrorists destroyed the telecommunications base transmission station (BTS). 4 Police officers manning the unit’s base countered the attack and spectacularly repulsed the attack killing 5 terrorists.
The National Police Service (NPS) of Kenya issued a statement confirming the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen conducted a night terrorist attack targeting Yumbis Rural Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) station and a telecommunications base transmission station (BTS) belonging to Safaricom Ltd in Kenya at Yumbis area of Lower Garissa. The attack came days after a terror warning by S.I targeting both civilians and security personnel in Garissa and Lamu areas of Lower North Eastern prefecture.
Intelligence report on the Yumbis terrorist attack show that approximately 30 members of Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen terror group based in Somalia crossed the border with Kenya using 3 modified Toyota Land cruiser vehicles (technical) and conducted the attack. 4 RBPU officers on sentry duty repulsed the attack though the terrorist managed to fire rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and destroyed the camp. 5 Terrorists were killed. 3 were killed at the scene while 2 others died as they escaped. This was a repeat terrorist attack. Terrorists have previously attacked Yumbis which is outside Dadaab refugee camp. Army Special Forces (KDF-SF) were called in to provide backup. Intelligence reports confirm there were no casualties on the RBPU officers.
