After killing 22 Al-Shabaab Mujahideen fighters in El-Miraleh, Puntland, December 16th the tiny Islamic States in Somalia, Abnaa Ul-Calipha recorded more success against the bitter rival in Godondhowe transit checkpoint town in Gedo region of Somalia and near the border with Kenya on December 22nd, killing a dozen members of the rival terrorist group.
This brings the total kill to approximately 33. This is a significant setback to Al-Shabaab. Both incidents confirm Abnaa Ul-Calipha has battlefield superiority coined from Al-Shabaab’s popular doctrine of ‘Small unit Success’. The steady battlefield losses to their rivals will only further endear many of its rank and file to join the Islamic States which seems more organized, focused, and gradually winning local support. Already the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen is complaining that Abnaa Ul-Calipha is reintroducing clannism in Somalia. On the other hand, ISIS in Somalia refers their rivals as monotheists who must be defeated.
Godondhowe is a strategic checkpoint town, 30 kilometers towards the Kenyan border. It is strategic location for Al-Qaeda’s Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen. Over the years, Shabaab Mujahideen have used Godondhowe as a taxation checkpoint for sugar and other commondities trucks from Gedo region to Mandera, Doolow, and other key townships along the Somali border with Kenya and Ethiopia.
After the El-Miraleh attack, Islamic States through its weekly newsletter ‘Al-Naba’, confirmed that it was following through on its recent threats, confirming that Abnaa Ul-Calipha was responding to the latest aggression against its members by the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia. ISIS talked up its special team rapid storming and defeating Al-Shabaab fighters in their camp. The terror group referred the attack as ‘Preemptive’ one further embarrassing its proud nemesis.
