The Central African Republic (CAR) has detained and handed over to a tribunal in the Netherlands water for war crimes including murder, deportation, and torture of Muslims in the country. Alfred Yekatom, a sitting member of parliament once nicknamed “Rambo,” was found guilty by a UN commission of inquiry for leading Christian militias for war crimes targeting the Muslim population in CAR.
The ICC issued a warrant of arrest for Yekatom on November 11th for his part in the crimes committed against humanity in western CAR between December 2014 and August 2014. Court judges say Yekatom is suspected of commanding about 3,000 members of an armed group operating within the anti-Balaka movement, which was carrying out a systematic attack against the Muslim population.
