Russia has announced that it foiled an elaborate terrorist attack using drones targeting the 2018 Summer World Cup. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said that at least seven different groups planned attacks against the visiting fans attending the world tournament.
However, the attacks were foiled both by the use of foreign intelligence cooperation and reinvigorated counterterrorism efforts by the FSB. No details of the plots were disclosed, but the director of the FSB claimed that drones were a key element of the threat and called for tighter government controls over the use of the devices.
Russia has been pursuing to develop the basics of the regulatory framework for the use of drones as on numerous occasions, she has claimed that drones are regularly used by terrorists in attempts to attack their military installations in Syria.
In recent months, reports have been emerging of terrorists using drones either to conduct surveillance, record their attacks among other uses increasing the reach of the terrorists to include having aerial capabilities. Therefore, it is crucial for the government to regulate the purchases of drones to prevent them from falling into wrong hands and thus giving terrorists air force capabilities that could change the face of the war on terror and dynamics f terrorist attacks globally.
