Kenya on Thursday 27th September 2018 extended amnesty to Kenyans who have joined Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia.
According to NEP Regional commissioner Mohamed Birik, the government has been profiling Kenyans who may have been recruited into the Somali base ragtag militia.
Birik stressed that the government would offer amnesty to local Al-Shabaab members if they came forward, denounce the group.
“I want to assure those who will surrender within the three months period will be pardoned. This message should reach everybody. We will also ensure their safety,” Birik was quoted.
Birik also noted that although the government has put measures to restore and sustain security in the region, the residents have even a bigger role to play in sharing information with security authorities.
Al-Shabaab has been accused of launching attacks targeting innocent civilians and security units on Kenya soil, as well as laying mines in northern and lower prefecture regions that neighbors Somalia.
